Today we welcome Gareth McMullan to our Podiatrist Spotlight. Gareth is Senior Podiatrist and owner of Happy Feet Foot Clinic Ltd, 22 Northland Row, Dungannon.
What attracted you to a career in podiatry?
I knew from an early age that I wanted to go into a medical career and decided to gain work experience. I shadowed a podiatrist, dentist and physiotherapist to learn more about each career and found podiatry the most enjoyable. The podiatrist explained to me that podiatry was a good career choice and highly recommend it, so I took their advice on board and decided to go for it!
How did your career develop?
I applied to various universities, settling on Glasgow Caledonian University, and completed my undergraduate degree. After university, I was offered a job in one of the hospital trusts in Belfast. Then, three months later, still waiting to receive my start date, I discussed with friends, who had taken jobs in private practices, who suggested I set up my own practice instead. So, I visited a few clinics, assessed the viability of opening a practice and decided to go for it! After opening the practice, I decided to carry on studying and enrolled on a masters in Podiatric Surgery and Medicine where I travelled back and forward between Glasgow Caledonian University and Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh while building up the practice.
What are the most common foot problems you see?
The most common foot problem I see is heel pain. Of the 20 clients I see every day, 5 of them visit the clinic complaining of heel pain. Aside from that, I often see ingrown toenails and dry cracked heels which is a result of people not looking after their skin properly.
What’s your number one tip on how to look after your feet?
It’s difficult to give just one top tip, I would say it’s between wearing good shoes and moisturising your feet every single day with a good foot product.
