What Causes Corns?

Corns are thickened areas of skin that develop as a result of friction and pressure on your feet. Here are some common causes:

  1. Ill-Fitting Shoes: Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause excessive rubbing, leading to corns.
  2. High Heels: These often put pressure on specific areas of the feet, especially the toes, causing corns to develop over time.
  3. Toe Deformities: Conditions like hammertoes can create friction against the shoe, leading to corns.
  4. Walking or Running: Repetitive movements can create pressure points on the feet, which over time can lead to corns.
  5. Not Wearing Socks: Going sockless in shoes causes more direct friction, which can irritate the skin and lead to corn formation.

Corns often appear on the tops and sides of the toes or between them, and though they’re small, they can be painful. If you’re experiencing discomfort from corns, seeing a podiatrist can help with treatment and prevention.
